Cost & Coverage

Kidney treatment can be covered. Understanding the system is the key.

Cost is the largest fear in kidney care. Private insurance, corporate plans and government schemes each have their own rules — this guide helps you work out what applies to you and how to claim without getting lost.

Routes to cover kidney treatment

Private health insurance

Policies bought individually or through an employer. Check the sum insured, whether transplant and dialysis are specifically covered, waiting periods (often 2–4 years for pre-existing conditions), and additional cover for immunosuppressant medicines.

Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY)

Provides up to ₹5 lakh per family per year to eligible families. Availability varies by state and scheme rules at the time. Carry your e-card, check which nearby hospitals are empanelled, and confirm pre-authorisation before admission.

CGHS / state employee schemes

Central government employees, pensioners and many state government employees are covered for kidney care. Under CGHS, treatment must usually be at an empanelled hospital with prior referral and approval.

ECHS and corporate TPAs

Armed forces personnel and families use ECHS; corporate employees are often covered through TPAs that manage claims on behalf of the insurer. Each TPA has its own cashless process and empanelment list.

How to claim without getting lost

  1. 1Get a written estimate from the hospital for surgery, medicines and follow-up before admission.
  2. 2Confirm coverage in writing with your insurer or scheme — including the exact pre-authorisation steps and documents needed.
  3. 3Keep every report, bill and discharge summary; claims fail most often on missing paperwork.
  4. 4For cashless claims, complete pre-authorisation before admission, not after.
  5. 5If a claim is rejected, request the rejection reason in writing — disputes are common and often won.

Common questions

Does my health insurance cover kidney transplant?

Many Indian health policies cover kidney transplant up to a limit, including hospitalisation and sometimes immunosuppressant medicines for a defined period. Cover varies by plan, sum insured and waiting period, so review your policy document — and ask your insurer in writing — before assuming anything.

Is dialysis covered?

Coverage for dialysis depends on the plan. Some policies cover a defined number of dialysis sessions; others exclude it or only cover dialysis done during a hospitalisation. Check your policy limits carefully.

What is Ayushman Bharat?

Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) is a national scheme providing health cover up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for eligible families, based on socio-economic criteria. Transplant and dialysis are covered for eligible beneficiaries in participating states, subject to the scheme's rules at the time.

What about government employees and corporate coverage?

CGHS (central government employees and pensioners), state employee schemes, and ECHS (armed forces) all provide kidney care coverage under their own rules. Corporate group policies vary by employer. Each has its own empanelment and approval process.
